Priorities- Comprehensive Audit: Conduct a comprehensive audit of all state government expenditures for the past ten years – including MEDC, MDHHS, and COVID-19 handouts – to root out fraud, waste, and abuse, such as what was recently discovered on a massive scale in Minnesota.

Candidate Social MediaOpen source ↗

"Just got out of my meeting with @VivekGRamaswamy and @elonmusk. It was very productive, and there are really good ideas on ways to responsibly cut government waste, slash bureaucratic red tape and limit spending. These are issues I've led on since I got to Congress. I've introduced legislation to enact term limits and enhance government efficiency. I look forward to working with DOGE to make sure these reforms are signed into law."

Voted YES on H.R.2811 - Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023: increases the federal debt limit and decreases spending. It also repeals several energy tax credits, modifies the permitting process and other requirements for energy projects, expands work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other programs, and nullifies regulations for the cancellation of federal student loan debt.

“There is no valid reason for these irresponsible cuts. This budget is based on wrong numbers and falsehoods, and it will make people’s lives worse."

"Goals to accomplish that include a new caregiver tax credit...

When asked if she would support universal healthcare during a press conference Thursday, Benson said healthcare should be available to everyone but argued any idea is only as good as the agency in charge of putting it in place.

'The centerpiece of my plan is recognizing that an outdated infrastructure bogs down MDHHS and that’s what we have to fix in order to achieve any of these outcomes. The agency is overburdened, it’s under resourced, and it’s a safety-net system that is failing and that is at the core of a lot of the stories I’m hearing around the state,' Benson said.

'As the next governor of Michigan, ensuring our healthcare system is affordable, accessible, and fair is my priority. And working with every single person to get that done while using every tool in my toolbox to get that done will be my mandate and will be my north star,' she told reporters."

“Laken Riley’s death was entirely preventable and never should have occurred. Her eventual murderer was detained and released not once, but twice, before he took Laken’s life. Michigan Public – Michigan's Race for Governor: Meet Candidate Jocelyn BensonOpen source ↗

"I will always be proud to stand up to even the president of the United States if he would try to interfere with the rights and protections that every resident in the state should be afforded." (Benson, July 2026 interview — referring to ICE operations and federal involvement)

"ICE agents coming and federal agents really terrorizing residents. Not just here in Michigan but across the nation"

Asked to comment on Gov. Whitmer's advocating for illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses, the Office of Secretary of State Benson issued this statement:
“Secretary Benson has met with community leaders and legislators and stands with the governor in support of changing the law so that all individuals working and residing in our state may obtain a state ID or a driver’s license for use in Michigan.”

Michigan Education AssociationOpen source ↗

Speaking to the Michigan Education Agency teachers' union, she vowed to "use every tool in her toolbox to protect every resident of this state, even if it means standing up to the president of the United States. If anyone at the federal level were to try to come for our families, for our kids, for any of you, or any of us.. that is not a partisan issue. That is a humanity issue, and the next governor of Michigan must have and demonstrate that they will live the moral courage that I have as Secretary of State to protect the young people, the educators, every resident of this state, no matter what type of tactic the bully in the White House tries to bring to our communities."

HEALTHCARE COSTS: Choice & Competition, Not Govt Control

Price controls & universal coverage don't work. They will diminish care, restrict options, & force taxpayers to pay for healthcare for others (including noncitizens).

"Market-based, patient-centered means your healthcare belongs to YOU, not insurance companies or the gov't. We MUST protect people with pre-existing conditions & seniors, lower costs, and increase transparency & competition. It's not about politics, it's about protecting people."

Candidate Social MediaOpen source ↗

"The path to fixing healthcare IS NOT MORE GOVERNMENT, IT’S LESS! It’s putting power back in the hands of the people.

When families have control, and we demand real competition and transparency, costs come down, access goes up, and care gets better.

That’s how you protect patients. That’s how we fix healthcare. That’s what I’ve been saying for the past eight years, and what I will do for the next eight."

Priorities- Protect girls’ sports and sensitive places (restrooms, locker rooms, etc.) to promote excellence, protect opportunity and guarantee safety for our girls. Sports are critical for the physical, mental, emotional and civic development of ALL of Michigan’s children! In order to maintain an inclusive, fun, fair and safe competitive athletic environment for ALL children, biological males will only be permitted to compete with and against other biological males (reasonable exceptions may include females competing in male leagues where there are limited options for females according to existing Title IX rules, prepubescent recreational leagues and clearly established and mutually agreed co-ed leagues).

Congressional WebsiteOpen source ↗

Voted YES on H.R.28 Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act — limits female school sports to students of the female sex.

Candidate Social MediaOpen source ↗

"It’s INSANITY that Michigan is going to continue to allow biological boys to play girls sports. That ends in 6 months when I’m Governor."

Candidate Social MediaOpen source ↗

Today the Supreme Court is hearing arguments in the critical cases on protecting women's sports - a defining moment for fairness, safety, and the future of girls' athletics. Biological males have NO place competing against our daughters. As your next Governor of Michigan, I will fiercely protect women's sports and ensure every girl has a fair, safe, and equal opportunity to compete.

"Benson would continue Whitmer’s Green New Scam energy mandates, and let unaccountable agencies like EGLE pile compliance requirements on Michigan businesses with zero economic justification. John James will end it on day one, every new rule clears a meaningful economic impact review, full stop."

Congressional WebsiteOpen source ↗

Voted YES on H.R.26 Protecting American Energy Production Act — prohibits any federal moratorium on hydraulic fracturing (fracking) unless authorized by Congress; affirms state primacy over fracking regulation on state and private lands. Supports protecting domestic energy production / barring a federal fracking ban.

News SourceOpen source ↗

"James said repealing the state's clean energy mandate would be a priority." (The clean energy mandate includes legislation forcing the transition of utlities to zero emissions by 2040 and allowing the state to approve large wind and solar arrays over local objections.)

"Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has 'chosen communism over common sense,' he said, vowing to pursue an 'all-of-the-above energy strategy' that would include 'natural gas, nuclear, hydro, renewables where they make economic sense, biofuels and emerging technologies.'”

"James promised to replace the members of the Michigan Public Service Commission....He said current members 'have demonstrated they are far more interested in pursuing an extremist ideological agenda and rubber-stamping rate increases for big utility monopolies than protecting ratepayers.'”

Voted YES on H.R.1615 - Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act: prohibits the Consumer Product Safety Commission from using federal funds to (1) regulate gas stoves as a banned hazardous product; or (2) issue or enforce a product safety standard that prohibits the use or sale of gas stoves, substantially increases the price of gas stoves, or makes a type of product unavailable based on the kind of fuel it consumes.

Benson was asked to assess how the clean energy mandate of 2023 is working and what changes she would make. (The energy package aims to hasten the state’s energy transition away from gasoline and natural-gas, by, among other things, promoting electric vehicles, allowing utility programs to incentivize replacing fossil-fuel appliances with electric alternatives, requiring regulated utilities to achieve 100% clean energy by 2040, and created a process allowing the state to approve large wind and solar projects—even over local opposition—when specified statutory conditions are met, limiting local governments' ability to block or impose more restrictive requirements on qualifying projects.)

Benson answer: "'If done right, this law puts Michigan in a position to lead the nation: expanding clean energy, strengthening grid reliability and lowering costs for families at the same time."

"Jocelyn Benson says the system “worked.” But non-citizens voted. More cases are still being uncovered. And Michiganders are still waiting for transparency and accountability. That’s not a system that worked. That’s a system that failed."

Congressional WebsiteOpen source ↗

Voted YES on H.R.22 SAVE Act — requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote.

Candidate Social MediaOpen source ↗

"At least 16 non-citizens voted in Michigan's November 2024 election, according to the Secretary of State's own review - despite her prior claims of no evidence. That's why I proudly signed the petition to place the Citizens Only Voting Amendment on the ballot. If passed, it will constitutionally require only U.S. citizens to vote in Michigan elections, mandate voter ID at the polls, and require regular review of voter rolls to remove ineligible voter."

Candidate Social MediaOpen source ↗

"It’s imperative that only American citizens vote in our elections. But far too often, as we saw this fall on U of M’s campus, foreign nationals are casting ballots in American elections. Over 80% of Americans support voter ID laws. This isn’t radical, it's commonsense."

Benson opposes the SAVE act, which would require voter id and proof of citizenship to vote: "The politicians pushing the SAVE Act are trying to sell it as a reasonable election security bill, but what it actually does is block millions of eligible U.S. citizens from casting their vote in future elections.

Secretary of State WebsiteOpen source ↗

Benson on the SAVE Act's requirement for proof of citizenship to register to vote: "...some states including Arizona and Kansas have already tried this failed policy of requiring specific documents like a birth certificate or U.S. passport to register to vote."

Candidate Social MediaOpen source ↗

"...I honor and remember an icon of this country. John Lewis fought for every person in this country to have the right to vote, no matter their race. He fought for fairness and equality, and his name is part of a monumental piece of legislation, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act....This bill has still not passed."

HB4 - John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021 - federalizing elections and making state go through DOJ to change voting laws. Voter ID laws would be considered discriminatory.

"The Second Amendment is not up for negotiation. Michigan gun owners do not need more lectures from politicians who have never carried the responsibility of protecting a family. "The Second Amendment is not optional, and neither is keeping our kids safe from violence. We deserve an America that can protect itself from tyranny without leaving its children vulnerable to terrorism. Gun deaths are symptoms of cultural decay and hopelessness in America. Doing nothing to address those symptoms is unacceptable, which is why I’m proud to introduce this commonsense school safety package to the U.S. House of Representatives. We are tackling an area that seems to have the least number of solutions - school safety - by first addressing mental health and constitutional responsibility from both sides of the aisle with this package.”

GENDER IDEOLOGY: Govt May Not Re-Define Gender or Impose Conformity

It is not the role of govt to define gender. Imposing a viewpoint on gender ideology violates constitutional protections against compelled speech.

"Priorities - John strongly opposes the state board of education’s gender insanity agenda and supports legislation to reverse the state board’s attempt to force this agenda on students. John strongly agrees with the US Supreme Court’s 2025 decision in Mahmoud v. Taylor to protect parents’ rights to stop left-wing ideology from being imposed on their children and supports legislation to codify parents’ rights in Michigan on this issue."

Candidate WebsiteOpen source ↗

"Michigan ranks 45th in 4th grade reading proficiency. Just this month, Lansing bureaucrats expanded “standards” pushing gender ideology instead of reading, writing, and math. Parents who speak up at school board meetings are labeled extremists and shut down. This isn’t education. It’s indoctrination. And it’s happening on the taxpayers’ dime. That’s why John James is taking action — with the most comprehensive and enforceable parental rights framework ever proposed in Michigan (...) guaranteeing parents full transparency in education, control over their children’s health care decisions, protection of student privacy, and real enforcement when those rights are violated."

“Children belong to God.
